The Igala Youth Council has firmly rejected the inclusion of the Igala nation in the proposed “United States of Biafra” by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The group condemned IPOB’s decision to name Igala as part of their 40-state secessionist agenda without consultation or consent.
In a statement issued on Monday in Lokoja, Kogi State, and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Michael Joshua, the council described IPOB’s actions as unacceptable and stressed that the Igala people are committed to the Nigerian nation.
“This strong stance was taken during an emergency meeting held on December 1, 2024, in response to a viral video outlining IPOB’s plan for a 40-state Biafran nation,” the statement read.
The council clarified that the Igala people had not been consulted or involved in any discussions about IPOB’s plans, rejecting any attempt to associate them with the secessionist movement. They emphasized their desire for improved governance within Nigeria rather than being drawn into what they termed “IPOB’s madness.”
The statement also referenced IPOB’s controversial tactics, including its imposition of weekly sit-at-home orders in the Southeast, which have disrupted economic activities and daily life. While IPOB describes its actions as a quest for self-determination, critics have accused the group of threatening national unity.
The Igala Youth Council urged its people worldwide to dismiss IPOB’s claims and continue their lawful activities within Nigeria. The council reaffirmed its commitment to unity and stability within the Nigerian state, distancing itself entirely from the proposed Biafran nation.
