Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, Nigeria, captivated the audience at the 3rd Annual Convention of the Esan Peoples Congress (EPC) on Saturday night.

Speaking via Zoom, Ighodalo’s presentation on “The Value of Participation of Nigerians in Diaspora in Nigerian Political Affairs” was met with enthusiastic applause and widespread admiration.

Commending the attendees for their dedication to their homeland, Ighodalo expressed his regret at not being able to attend in person but praised technology for enabling his participation. “Technology has come to the rescue and I could not be happier or more proud at this rare opportunity to address such an august body,” he stated.

In his compelling speech, Ighodalo highlighted the crucial role of the Nigerian diaspora, which he described as one of the most vibrant globally, contributing significantly across various sectors including medicine, information technology, academia, and finance. “The Nigerian diaspora represents a vast reservoir of skill, experience, and capital,” Ighodalo noted, emphasizing their untapped potential to influence positive political changes in Nigeria.

He pointed out that while the diaspora’s remittances surpass foreign direct investments and aid, their involvement in shaping policy and political dialogue is more critical than ever. “In an era where governance and transparency are at the forefront of our national discourse, your involvement is crucial,” he said.

Ighodalo advocated for the diaspora’s engagement in policy advocacy, capacity building, and development to influence reforms in governance and economic management. He proposed creating think tanks and advisory boards to leverage the diaspora’s global exposure and professional networks. “These advisory boards could effectively act as trusted liaisons between the government and international organizations, facilitating partnerships and attracting foreign investments,” he explained.

Outlining his vision for Edo State, Ighodalo introduced his “Pathway to Prosperity for All in Edo” initiative, aimed at transforming the state into a first-world economy. This plan focuses on security, economic growth, innovation and technology, education and skill development, infrastructure development, healthcare reform, and good governance and transparency.

“My administration’s vision to transform Edo State into a first-world economy is not just an aspiration but a detailed roadmap,” he declared. The initiative seeks to integrate the principles of diligence, creativity, and resilience prevalent in the diaspora into the state’s governance model.

In his concluding remarks, Ighodalo invited the diaspora to join him in realizing this vision, emphasizing the importance of their involvement inspired by their successes abroad. “Come with me as we embark on this ambitious journey to transform Edo State. Your involvement is not just desired but essential,” he urged.

During the Q&A session moderated by Barr. Chris Ekoh, Ighodalo adeptly addressed questions on topics ranging from infrastructure and security to corruption, earning further admiration from the participants. The session ended with loud and sustained applause, signaling strong support for his vision and leadership.
