The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has deployed a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to Imo State to combat rising criminal activities and insecurity.

This move is part of the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the state.

According to DSP Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the State Police Command, the deployment is a proactive measure to tackle criminal activities, enhance peace, and ensure security across the state’s three geopolitical zones.

The SIS unit comprises over 60 specially trained and equipped personnel tasked with reducing crime, dismantling criminal networks, and addressing security threats.

The unit will work collaboratively with the State Police Command, other security agencies, and local vigilantes to implement a comprehensive strategy for enhancing public safety.

“Personnel will be strategically stationed across the state’s three senatorial districts, focusing on areas with heightened security concerns.

“This strategic approach will enable the SIS unit to effectively address critical public safety throughout the State,” he stated.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, expressed gratitude to the IGP for the deployment and acknowledged the support of Governor Hope Uzodinma.

The special squad was first launched in July 2023 and has played a key role in addressing nationwide security challenges.

The deployment comes amid rising tension in the state due to kidnapping incidents and other related crimes.

Recently, a Catholic priest, Fr. John Ubaechu, was abducted, and three suspected kidnappers, including a 22-year-old female PoS operator, were arrested for allegedly abducting Mr. Sabinus Ibeh.
