The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set February 3 as the date for conducting rerun and by-elections across nine states.

Mr. Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in Abuja while unveiling the timetable and activities schedule for these elections on Friday.

Olumekun clarified that these elections were necessitated by vacancies arising from the resignations or demise of members in both the National and State Houses of Assembly, declared by the Presiding Officers – the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly Speakers.

He outlined the nature of the vacancies, spanning two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies across nine states.

Additionally, he highlighted the Commission’s obligation to hold re-run elections as mandated by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals, affecting a total of 35 Constituencies stemming from the 2023 general election.

Olumekun emphasized that these elections, covering entire constituencies or specific polling units, are all slated to occur simultaneously on Saturday, Feb. 3.

The electoral timetable and comprehensive delimitation data, encompassing registration areas, polling unit names, registered voter numbers, and PVCs collected, have been uploaded to INEC’s website and social media platforms. This serves as a guide for political parties, candidates, and public awareness.

He urged political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the specified timelines outlined for the election process.
