A tragic stampede claimed the lives of ten individuals during a food distribution exercise at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday, December 21, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. as vulnerable and elderly persons gathered to receive food items.
Among the deceased were four children, highlighting the devastating nature of the tragedy. Additionally, eight others sustained injuries, four of whom have since been treated and discharged, while the remaining injured are receiving medical attention at nearby facilities.
Confirming the incident, the FCT Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, expressed sympathy for the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. Authorities have pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent such occurrences in the future.
