Truthlive.net had reported that over 600 inmates were said to have been freed by the attackers but 300 of them have been retrieved and returned back to the facility.
Among the escapees were former top government functionaries who are currently in the correctional centre including former Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, former Plateau Governor Joshua Dariye as well as former Taraba State Governor Jolly Nyame.
The attackers who stormed the prison with explosives encountered fierce resistance from military personnel and prison guards on duty but were still able to carry out their mission.
according to sources around the area, the attackers first detonated five explosives at about 10:25pm causing confusion in the area before detonating three more as well as shooting sporadically.
As at the time of filing in this report, it is however unknown if Abba Kayri, his men and the two governors were evacuated by the prison authorities for their safety during the attack.
