The Lagos State government has sealed the popular Alade Market in Onigbongbo LCDA in Ikeja.

This move was disclosed by Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on his X account on Wednesday.

Gawat explained that the market’s closure was a result of various environmental violations, including the absence of waste bins, unsanitary conditions, and the unauthorized burning of waste on the roadside.

Furthermore, the reckless dumping of garbage and non-compliance with the regulations set by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were additional factors contributing to the market’s shutdown.

Alade Market is the latest popular market in the state to be closed down due to environmental issues.

On Monday, the Alaba International Market, situated along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, also met a similar fate.

The Commissioner of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources for Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab, cited reasons such as poor waste disposal practices, failure to settle waste bills, and serious violations of environmental sanitation rules for the closure of the market.

Meanwhile, Ladipo Market, Agbado Oke-Odo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alayabiagba Market, Alamutu (Ologede) Market, and sections of Tejuosho Market, which had previously been shut down, have since been reopened.
