A 35-year-old man, Mas’ud Yusuf, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrates’ Court in Jiwa for inflicting grievous harm on his female friend, Fatima Muhammad Lawal.

Yusuf was convicted under sections 247 and 265 of the Penal Code, with no option of a fine, following his shocking act of violence.

Chief Magistrate Linda J. C delivered the ruling, describing Yusuf’s actions as both brutal and unjustifiable. The case was brought to light after Fatima reported the incident to the “A” Police Division in Dei-Dei on January 11.

According to the prosecution, Yusuf attacked Fatima with a cutlass after finding her in a room with one of his friends. The violent outburst led to the amputation of one of Fatima’s fingers and injuries to another as she attempted to shield herself. Prosecuting counsel J. N. Atinko revealed that Yusuf had aimed at Fatima’s neck before she blocked the attack with her hand.

During the trial, Yusuf admitted to the crime, attributing his actions to annoyance and pleading with the court for leniency. However, the magistrate emphasized the need for justice and deterrence, sentencing him to two years behind bars.
