Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has voiced concern over the underutilization of natural gas in Nigeria, despite the country’s vast reserves. In a meeting at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Ekpo called on Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU) to ramp up natural gas delivery for both domestic consumption and export.
Ekpo highlighted Nigeria’s “paradoxical situation” as a major gas-endowed nation yet with “alarmingly low natural gas utilisation.” He urged SEPNU, through its Managing Director Mr Dotun Isiaka, to collaborate with the government to reverse this trend.
According to a statement by the minister’s spokesman, Louis Ibah, the meeting allowed SEPNU to update on their progress since assuming control of ExxonMobil’s assets in December 2024, particularly concerning the gas components of the divestment deal.
Ekpo praised SEPNU for the successful takeover and expressed hope for swift progress in Gas Sales Agreements, which are vital for kick-starting the gas industry and supplying the nation with essential natural gas through key projects.
“The minister emphasized the importance of SEPNU working harmoniously with its host communities to deliver value to all stakeholders and solidify its position as a leading independent indigenous energy company,” the statement continued.
Ekpo also stressed the necessity of SEPNU adhering to project timelines to ensure the successful execution of initiatives that would positively impact Nigeria’s economy. He noted that SEPNU’s achievements would be pivotal in aligning with Nigeria’s objectives to harness its gas resources for economic growth and development.
Further, Ekpo reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing indigenous involvement in the oil and gas sector, boosting economic development through sustainable energy practices, and creating an investment-friendly environment.
In response, Dotun Isiaka, SEPNU’s Managing Director, updated Ekpo on ongoing engagements with potential buyers for gas from their assets, while also seeking the minister’s support to navigate legislative and regulatory challenges to achieve their ambitious gas project goals.
