A catastrophic incident occurred on Cele Bridge, along Oshodi/Apapa Expressway, late Friday night, when a truck’s mechanical failure led to a multiple accident, involving a car and tricycle.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), “The articulated truck, registration number unknown, was conveying a 40-feet container, laden to capacity.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck suffered mechanical failure while ascending the bridge, causing it to roll backwards and partially fall on the car and tricycle behind it.
“The information gathered revealed that the truck’s mechanical failure was the primary cause of the accident,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. However, the truck driver, an adult male, sustained injuries.
“The driver was rescued and receiving medical attention,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu assured.
The accident resulted in extensive damage to two out of the three vehicles involved, severely disrupting traffic flow.
LASEMA’s Emergency Response Team from Cappa responded promptly, arriving at the scene at 20:20hrs.
“Measures have been taken by responders to evacuate the vehicles from the bridge,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such catastrophic failures.
