The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced a significant drug bust at Eleko Beach in Lekki, Lagos. On Christmas Eve, operatives intercepted two boats carrying 1,960 kilograms of cannabis, known as “Ghanaian Loud,” and arrested six foreign nationals involved in the operation.

The suspects include two Ghanaians, Godsway John (38) and Freedom Kelvin (33), and four Beninese nationals, Chegoun Hounsou (23), Gadabor Nyameto (47), Adantg Sasa (34), and Ayao Kayivi (21). According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the cannabis was smuggled into Nigeria from Ghana via waterways.

Babafemi revealed, “Operatives of the Marine Command intercepted the boats at 2:30am during a midnight operation. The suspects have been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing.”

In a separate operation, Babafemi said a 48-year-old businessman, Orizu Arthur, was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on December 22. Orizu, who was attempting to board an Air France flight to Paris, refused a body scan during passenger clearance, claiming medical reasons.

“Subsequent observation led to the excretion of 74 wraps of Class A drugs over seven days,” Babafemi stated. Orizu, a trader from Lagos, admitted he was promised €3,000 for delivering the drugs to Paris.

Similarly, Babafemi said a raid in Benin City, Edo State, on 23rd December led to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect, Kosisochukwu Ozigbo.

“Recovered from the suspect were: 32,490 pills of tramadol (225mg, 200mg, and 100mg); 936 bottles of codeine-based syrup; and various quantities of other opioids,” he added.
