The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed plans to add an additional 150 megawatts (MW) to Nigeria’s national electricity grid before the end of 2024. This development is part of ongoing efforts to enhance power supply across the country under the Siemens-led Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).
Adelabu made this announcement during a briefing with State House correspondents following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He highlighted significant progress in the pilot phase of the initiative, which includes the installation and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations. “We have completed about 80% of the pilot stage,” Adelabu stated, noting that these efforts have already contributed 750 MW to Nigeria’s grid capacity.
Looking ahead, the next phase of the Siemens project aims to rehabilitate 14 existing substations and build 23 new ones nationwide. Adelabu emphasized the critical need to address Nigeria’s aging power infrastructure, adding, “We are transitioning to Phase One of the project, with the first batch of this phase already concluded in terms of commercial agreements.”
This marks a pivotal step in the federal government’s commitment to improving electricity supply for Nigerians.
