The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the employment of at least 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses to provide medical care to inmates in correctional centres across the country.
Truth Live News reports that this move is directed at addressing the medical needs of inmates and improve healthcare services in correctional facilities.
The government has also approved the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to post medical doctors to correctional centres for their compulsory one-year service.
Also, the Federal Government has approved the extension of service beyond retirement age for existing medical personnel under the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the move is intended to “cover for shortfalls in the short term.”
Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo announced presidential approval for the establishment of a National Paramilitary Academy, which will provide training for young citizens in paramilitary engagement.
