Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, reaffirmed his unwavering support for Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, defending his endorsement during the off-cycle governorship poll on November 11, 2023.
The Former President made it clear that he owed no one an apology for throwing his weight behind Diri’s re-election bid.
In a detailed explanation, Jonathan reiterated that his support for Diri stemmed from the exemplary leadership the Governor exhibited in managing the state’s affairs.
He emphasized the importance of endorsing Diri, noting the widespread backing he had garnered from the majority of Bayelsa’s populace to continue leading the state.
During the Yuletide visit of Governor Diri and a delegation to his residence in Yenagoa, the state capital, Jonathan expressed his satisfaction with Diri’s efforts, particularly in curbing the activities of cult groups, which had notably reduced in Yenagoa under the Governor’s watch. He emphasized the critical role of security in attracting investments for the state’s progress.
Jonathan clarified, “I did what I did during the governorship election, and I have no apologies to anybody because I know that the governor and his team were doing very well, especially in the area of peace and stability of the state.”
“I have not said others did not do well. After all, l was also a governor for a little less than one and a half years and also had my challenges.
“I saw that the governor and his team have a vision and he needed to be encouraged to do another four-year term.”
He challenged the Governor to strive for greater achievements to fulfill the high expectations of his supporters, stating, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”
In response, Governor Diri expressed his gratitude for Jonathan’s support and endorsement, crediting it as a significant factor contributing to the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party. He acknowledged the former President’s influence as being more impactful than monetary support, solidifying their victory and fostering stability in the state.
Optimistic about Jonathan’s potential role in reconciling people within the country and across Africa for peace and development, Governor Diri highlighted the former President’s future engagements.
The presence of dignitaries, including National Assembly members, former state assembly members, traditional rulers, and key figures from Bayelsa’s political landscape, marked the visit alongside Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, adding prominence to the event.
