In a recent series of bold statements, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un intensified global tensions by issuing grave warnings against the United States and South Korea.
State media reported his explicit directive for the military to “thoroughly annihilate” these nations if provoked, escalating concerns about a potential conflict.
During a pivotal ruling party meeting that spanned five days, Kim articulated plans to bolster national defense in response to what he termed an unprecedented confrontation led by the U.S.
He outlined ambitious strategies, including the launch of three additional military spy satellites, increased production of nuclear materials, and the development of advanced attack drones. Analysts interpreted these moves as an effort to fortify his negotiation position in future dealings with the U.S.
In a recent gathering with high-ranking army officials, Kim emphasized the urgent need to enhance “the treasured sword” to protect national security, an implicit nod to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Citing the perceived military provocations by the U.S. and other adversarial forces, Kim stressed the necessity for swift and decisive action, urging the military to mobilize its full might without hesitation in the face of aggression.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, in his New Year’s Day address, responded to North Korea’s escalating threats by affirming plans to strengthen preemptive strike capabilities, missile defense systems, and retaliatory measures against the North’s nuclear threat.
“The Republic of Korea is building genuine, lasting peace through strength, not a submissive peace that is dependent on the goodwill of the adversary,” Yoon said, using South Korea’s official name.
At the party meeting, Kim called South Korea “a hemiplegic malformation and colonial subordinate state” whose society is “tainted by Yankee culture.”
He said his military must use all available means including nuclear weapons to “suppress the whole territory of South Korea” in the event of a conflict.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry warned in response that if North Korea attempts to use nuclear weapons, South Korean and U.S. forces will punish it overwhelmingly, resulting in the end of the Kim government.
KCNA said North Korean officials held talks on Monday to implement an order by Kim to disband or reform organizations handling relations with South Korea to fundamentally change the principle and direction of the North’s struggle against the South.
There was no immediate explanation of how that might alter inter-Korean relations, which have been stalled for an extended period.
