Governor Godwin Obaseki reaffirmed his commitment to a governance style focused on bettering the lives of Edo State residents.

Speaking at a homecoming reception for the triumphant Edo Queens Football Club, Obaseki emphasized that his administration prioritizes serving the people and steering the state toward accelerated growth and prosperity.

The reception, held at the Government House in Benin City, celebrated the Edo Queens’ recent triumph as the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six Champions in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Their victory secures them a spot in the continental CAF Women Champions League, a historic achievement for the team and the state.

Governor Obaseki highlighted his administration’s achievements since taking office in 2016, contrasting the despair prevalent at the time with the renewed hope and enthusiasm among the youth today. He attributed this transformation to his government’s focus on utilizing state resources effectively and transparently.

“I don’t bother when people talk about things they don’t know. We have no regrets; the money they refused to use for Edo people is the money we have turned around and used for our people,” Obaseki stated. “In the last eight years, we have fought different battles and have overcome them all. No matter what they do, we will continue to use Edo money for Edo people.”

The governor assured that his administration would resist any attempts to divert public funds for private gain, emphasizing the importance of using state resources to benefit the people and develop Edo State.

Obaseki also praised the significant investments his administration has made in the sports sector, leading to the revival of sports in the state. “Before we came, sports were in disarray. We reorganized it, created a sports commission, and hired qualified people. Today, look at the result,” he remarked.

First Lady Dr. Mrs. Betsy Obaseki echoed the governor’s sentiments, expressing her pride in the Edo Queens and thanking the administration for its unwavering support of sports development in the state. “This is the most glorious and joyous day for me as Edo Queens have made me proud. We thank the governor and his administration for their commitment to renewing sports in Edo State,” she said.
