Former Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd), a former military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, and a former Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs. The retired military officer passed away on Saturday at the age of 75.
In a statement released on Sunday, Obaseki hailed General Abbe as an illustrious son of Edo State who made significant contributions to the peace, unity, and development of both the state and the nation. He described him as a “distinguished statesman, administrator par excellence, and a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.”
The governor highlighted the retired general’s illustrious military career, which included serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). General Abbe also served as Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs, roles in which he excelled and demonstrated outstanding leadership.
“An illustrious Edo son, the late General Abbe was a brave, cerebral, dogged and gallant officer worthy of commendation and emulation,” Obaseki said.
Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late military officer, Obaseki described him as an invaluable ally whose counsel played a pivotal role in addressing crime and insecurity during his tenure as governor. “His guidance and wise counsel were instrumental in ensuring the success of our administration,” he added.
The governor extended his condolences to the Nigerian Army, the people of Edo State, the Abbe family, and the late general’s friends and associates, praying for strength to bear the loss.
“Major General Abbe will be fondly remembered for his loyalty, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to the peace, unity, security, and development of Nigeria,” Obaseki concluded.
