Toba Owojaiye reporting
The outgoing Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, marked his final day in office with an act of clemency, granting pardons to 10 inmates with less than a year remaining on their sentences in correctional centers across the state.
Truth Live News gathered that this decision, an exercise of his prerogative of mercy, was made upon the recommendation of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by retired Justice P.O. Isibor. According to a statement issued by Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media, the pardon included inmates Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, and others, fulfilling a request from the Benin Correctional Service.
The statement read, “Following the ending of His Excellency’s tenure, the council received a letter from the Benin Correctional Service, dated 5th day of November 2024, requesting for clemency for the inmates having less than one year to serve, forwarded to the council by the Controller of the Correctional Centre.
“The council convened a meeting where their applications were scrutinised and unanimously made appropriate recommendations.
“Mr Governor is respectfully invited to consider and approve the recommendations of the council.”
Today, as the baton passes to the newly elected governor, Monday Okpebholo, a mixed feeling pervades the atmosphere of Benin City. Okpebholo, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner in a highly controversial manner over the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the recent gubernatorial elections held on September 21.
The inauguration ceremony at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will see APC governors, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and prominent national figures in attendance.
Despite the celebratory nature of the transition, it is reported that Obaseki may not be present, stating he was not invited to the inauguration. While Obaseki’s absence might be noted, the day remains one of both reflection and retrospection for Edo State, as its leadership enters a new chapter.
