Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki reportedly engaged in talks with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja, seeking support for Asue Ighodalo’s bid for the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship ticket in the upcoming February 22, 2024 primary election.
Truth Live News, gathered that, the meeting, attended by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, aimed to counter opposition from Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Philip Shaibu.
The Wells Carlton Hotel gathering addressed Obaseki’s concerns about Ogbeide-Ihama, a strong contender and ally of Wike’s associate Dan Orbih. Ighodalo, expressing confidence in securing the party’s ticket, faces a delicate challenge against Ogbeide-Ihama and Shaibu in Obaseki’s perception.
During the meeting, Obaseki sought reconciliation with Wike, acknowledging past misunderstandings. The proposal included Ighodalo potentially choosing Ogbeide-Ihama as his running mate. However, Wike bluntly rejected any dealings, citing Obaseki’s history of unfulfilled commitments.
The fallout originated from Obaseki’s team reneging on their agreement to grant Team Orbih 4 commissioner positions and a senatorial ticket. This breach led to a demand for a “level-playing field” by Wike, emphasizing the need for a fair competition to determine the most suitable candidate.
Observers speculate on Obaseki’s motives, with some interpreting it as support for Ighodalo and others as an effort to prevent past mistakes from impacting an innocent and competent candidate.
