The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, has visited the grave site where about 80 persons burnt to death by the petrol Tanker explosion of last week Saturday were buried.
Obi, who visited Niger State to see the site of the recent petrol tanker explosion along the Dikko-Maje Road in Suleja Local Government Area, said the country must work assiduously towards ending such frequent occurrences.
He expressed deep sorrow and described the tragedy as a heartbreaking and preventable loss.
The former Anambra State governor also visited some of the victims receiving treatment at the hospital.
Addressing journalists during the visit, Mr Obi expressed deep concern over the rising frequency of such accidents, stating:
“These tragic incidents, which have sadly become increasingly recurrent, underscore the urgent need for stricter safety measures.
“Addressing the dangers of tanker explosions and similar occurrences requires immediate action, including the repair of existing roads and targeted efforts to lift people out of poverty.
“By prioritising safety and economic stability, we can prevent the devastating loss of lives and properties, particularly among poor Nigerians who risk their lives scooping fuel from fallen petrol tankers.”
During his visit, Mr Obi met with Sarkin Dikko and members of the traditional council to personally convey his condolences.
He expressed solidarity with the affected families and the people of Niger State.
Mr Peter Obi expressed his gratitude to the Niger State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their intervention efforts so far.
He pledged to assist the families of the victims and support micro-businesses within the community, aiming to help rebuild livelihoods and foster economic resilience.
