Democracy is best described by periodic election, showing that the people are integral or the most important factor in any democracy.

This is why I do not pity any society that suffer from chronic bad governance because they had the chance of choice and most times fall short.

Most times Nigerians do not consider the things that really matter in choosing who to vote for. It shows in the grotesque personalities we have had as elected Presidents and Governors. For instance how does anyone choose an Obasanjo over a Falae; a buhari over a Dr. Jonathan; a Tinubu over an Obi; an Oshiomohle over an Osunbor? I can go on and on.

It is not rocket science choosing among candidates of different parties in any election if one focuses on the things that really matter. Character, competence and personality are the traits to be considered when choosing a leader, whether in business or in politics.

Why have we failed to get this simple act correctly in Africa and Nigeria especially? It doesn’t appear that we think it is important the kind of people that superintend over or run our public institutions.

It is paradoxic that when we want to employ anyone for our business or homes, we insist on interviewing them and ensure we get the best possible applicant or candidate , but we don’t hold candidates for political offices to such scrutiny and high standards. How do we expect our state and country to run well if we allow any bungling idiot unhindered access to public offices?

Now read this slowly, Edo will not change if we do not run the pooitucs that will develop Edo. The politics we run should have the people and the state at the epicenter. The divisive politics along party and tribal schisms is the reason our state has not been able to really get to where it should be. It is why for the whole times Obaseki has spent as Governor, the political class has fought him to the death, dragging him that he has done nothing. They say he has done nothing while using his 24 hours Ossiomo electricity, driving on his road to their houses or work places at Iyekogba, Okhoromi, Obagie, Amangba axis where Obaseki pristine road network have completely turned around the communities around there, creating new city centres.

They drive on the Sobe road, Ososo road, Obazagbon/Igiogba, Ogwa, Ebele road and still say Obaseki has done nothing…

Obaseki’s most visible example of good governance is his reform of Edo state public service institution.TO BE CONTD.

Daniel Osa-Ogbegie writes from his residence at Etete new layout where he enjoys Godwin Obaseki’s pristine road networks.
