Stakeholders in Ogun State have emphasized the need for support and welfare programs for families of deceased journalists.

This call was made during the inaugural empowerment program for families of deceased journalists, held in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Ogun State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, highlighted the occupational hazards faced by journalists, including threats to their lives, job insecurity, and poor remuneration.

He stressed the importance of addressing these concerns to ensure journalists’ families are not left in despair when tragedy strikes.

Onasanya proposed the creation of welfare programs, insurance plans, and scholarship funds for journalists’ spouses and children.

He emphasized that when journalists feel secure about their families’ well-being, they will perform their duties with greater commitment and confidence.

The program, themed Oniroyin Support Initiative, featured a free medical outreach for all journalists and distributed ₦50,000 each to 20 beneficiaries.

Consultant to the Governor on Media and Communications, Tunde Oladunjoye, convener of the initiative, appreciated Governor Abiodun and the Ministry of Health for their collaboration.

Other dignitaries at the event included Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Lanre Ogunyinka, and former NBC Director, Eddy Aina, among others.
