In a public statement issued on Thursday, Dr. Obaseki clarified that the individuals behind the video impersonated elected legislators, who are currently on recess, to create a false narrative. “I urge the general public to disregard this video in its entirety, as it is the product of a criminal act perpetrated by hoodlums and thugs. These individuals impersonated the legitimately elected legislators in a failed attempt to undermine the democratic will of the people of Oredo,” he stated.
Dr. Obaseki expressed deep concern over the implications of such lawless behavior, emphasizing its potential threat to democratic governance. “If this level of impunity is allowed to stand, tomorrow, anyone could wake up, invade a government house, and declare themselves governor or president. Such a scenario is unthinkable in a lawful society. We are not in a banana republic where anarchy reigns,” he added.
The Chairman reaffirmed his mandate, highlighting that he was duly elected by the people of Oredo on September 2, 2023. He assured residents that his commitment to serving the local government remains unwavering. “I remain the duly elected Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, and the mandate given to me by the good people of Oredo remains intact,” he asserted.
As the Chief Security Officer of the council, Dr. Obaseki has called on the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Oba Market Division to promptly investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. He demanded arrests on grounds of criminal trespass, breakage, impersonation, and the attempted subversion of democracy.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Obaseki appealed for calm and urged residents to remain law-abiding as the authorities address the matter. “Let us all remain calm and allow the rule of law to prevail. The authorities will do their job, and justice will be served,” he reassured.
This development has drawn widespread attention, with many observers waiting to see how the authorities will respond to the unprecedented breach of local government legislative protocol.
