Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to sack three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) over alleged gross misconduct in the 2023 general elections.
The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia State), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa State), and Nura Ali (Sokoto State).
Oyintiloye described the sack as a clear signal of the President’s desire to sanitize the country’s electoral system.
He also praised the Senate for approving the President’s request to terminate the appointments of the suspended RECs.
The APC chieftain believes that the sack will serve as a strong warning to others, ensuring that bribery and corruption are not tolerated in the electoral system.
He added that the move will restore confidence in the country’s electoral processes and ensure accountability.
Oyintiloye commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for taking disciplinary action against the RECs in March 2023.
He recalled that Yunusa-Ari was suspended for unlawfully usurping the Returning Officer’s role in the 2023 Adamawa governorship election, while Ali and Uzochukwu were suspended for dereliction of duty.
The APC chieftain also praised INEC for the conviction of Prof. Ignatius Udok for electoral fraud, saying it demonstrates the commission’s commitment to electoral integrity.
Oyintiloye urged President Tinubu not to relent in his fight against corruption, noting that the effort has started yielding positive results.
