NIGERIA, UYO – Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has received the symbolic torch to commence the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo. The torch was presented at Government House, Uyo, by Olympic medalist Aniefiok Udobong.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to host, Governor Eno commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for selecting Akwa Ibom.
He highlighted the festival’s role in fostering regional unity and discovering new sports talents.
“I deeply appreciate the integrative nature of the sports festival, as it will help unite and bring the entire region together for our common good,” he said.
The event was witnessed by members of the State Executive Council.
The Chairman of the festival planning committee, Alabo Boma Iyaye, described the competition as the first of its kind in the South-South region.
He revealed that over 4,000 athletes from Niger Delta states would compete in various sports for medals.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ekerete Udoh, confirmed the significance of the festival but did not specify its duration.
The event, according to Udoh, aligns with the government’s vision for youth engagement and talent development.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival is expected to boost sportsmanship and economic activities in the region, reinforcing Akwa Ibom’s position as a hub for athletic excellence.
