A support group in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu to take the path of honour by resigning from his position.

This call was contained in a press release signed by the global coordinator of the group known as the PDP Rescue Mission, Dcn. Darlington Okpebholo Ray, insisting that since Ayu had made the promise to resign once a northern candidate emerged as the party`s flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election.

According to the statement, “Ayu did promise during his campaign for the national chairmanship position that once a northerner becomes the candidate of the party, he would step down for a southerner to become the national chairman, now that Mr. Atiku Abubakar has won the ticket, why is Ayu still holding on tight to the position”, the group queried.

“We are aware that the PDP currently has issues with leadership, occasioned by the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the Presidential candidate when we are already having northerners as chairmen of the Party and the Board of Trustees”.

“We are also aware that the current national chairman, senator Iyiorchia Ayu did make a promise to allow for a southern national chairmanship should a northern Presidential candidate emerges, but what we cannot understand right now is why the chairman has refused to be a man of honour and resign”.

“We hereby use this medium to call on our National Chairman, Sen Iyiorchia Ayu to do the needful, be a man of integrity and resign so as to allow the party to move forward as we have it on good authority that the vast majority of the party faithful, especially the governors will not work with the party if Ayu remains in office”.

“Ayu is not bigger than the party, as a matter of fact, no one is bigger than the PDP, Ayu should allow fairness to prevail and respect the natural doctrine of diversity and equality, above all, he should respect the principles of zoning of positions as established by our founding fathers so as the party could go into the coming general elections in one accord”.

Truthlive.net can recall that embattled Ayu had said in October 2021 that he would step aside once a northern candidate emerges and the party decides he should go, as he is a man who believes in the unity of the party and was ready to sacrifice anything to ensure that the PDP wins the 2023 presidential election.
