The Edo Central Senatorial District is set to witness a pivotal election to fill the vacant seat left by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who ascended to the governorship of Edo State.

This vacancy presents an opportunity for the people of Edo Central to write a new chapter in the senatorial history of the zone, which has long been a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

As the political climate heats up, the contest is expected to be intense, with both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) fielding strong contenders. Historically, the PDP has dominated Edo Central, but internal divisions in recent years have weakened its grip on the senatorial seat, which slipped to the APC in 2023.

Anenih Jr

Edo Central has been represented by distinguished senators from various local government areas (LGAs) within the district. From 1999 to 2007, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor from Esan West LGA held the position.

He was succeeded by Senator Odion Ugbesia from Esan South-East, who served from 2007 to 2015. Senator Clifford Ordia, from Esan Central, then took over and served two terms from 2015 to 2023.

Notably, Uromi, a major community in Esan North-East LGA with a significant voting population, has yet to produce a senator in over 25 years of democratic governance. This historical context adds weight to the current call for equitable representation, with many stakeholders arguing that it is time for Uromi to have its turn.

Yakubu

The PDP has zoned the senatorial position to Esan North-East LGA, reflecting a strategic move to address the long-standing demand for balance and fairness in political representation within the district. This decision has brought attention to prominent names from Uromi, who are touted as potential candidates.

Hon. John Yakubu, a former LGA chairman and PDP’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election, is one of the leading aspirants. Yakubu’s experience and grassroots appeal make him a strong contender. His tenure as an LGA chairman and his role in the gubernatorial race have earned him respect within the party and among constituents.

Joe Okojie

Rt. Hon. Friday Itulah, another prominent name, is a former federal lawmaker with legislative experience that resonates with voters. His network of loyal supporters and understanding of governance make him a strong candidate. Many believe he has the expertise to effectively represent Edo Central in the Senate.

Hon. Joe Okojie, known for his developmental initiatives, is also in the running. His focus on community-driven projects has left a lasting impact on the Uromi community, making him a strong candidate with a track record of delivering results.

On the APC side, Hon. Odianosen Okojie, the current member of the House of Representatives, is being considered for the senatorial race. Although his tenure in the House has not been particularly eventful, his youth and determination make him a candidate who cannot be underestimated. His growing political network and drive could make him a formidable contender.

Another name gaining attention is Mr. Tony Anenih Jr., son of the late Chief Tony Anenih, a former national leader of the PDP. Anenih Jr. has a strong financial base and a solid political structure that extends beyond Edo State. His connections within and outside the PDP make him a serious contender, and his potential entry into the race could significantly alter the dynamics.

Itulah

For the PDP to reclaim the senatorial seat, it must address the divisions that emerged during Senator Clifford Ordia’s tenure. Ordia’s controversial bid for a third term created rifts within the party, ultimately contributing to the APC’s victory. A united PDP, potentially rallying around a consensus candidate, would significantly boost the party’s chances of regaining the seat.

The stakes are high for the PDP in this election. Edo Central has been the party’s backbone since 1999, and losing the seat again would further weaken its regional influence. Conversely, presenting a widely accepted candidate with a focused campaign could restore the party’s dominance in the zone.

Selecting a consensus candidate would help the PDP avoid unnecessary conflicts and infighting. Such an approach would signal unity and strength, reassuring voters that the party is prepared to prioritize the collective interest of Edo Central over individual ambitions. Unity and peace are essential to this effort, as divisiveness would only benefit the opposition.

All aspirants must recognize that the party’s strength lies in their collective effort. Whoever emerges as the chosen candidate must be supported wholeheartedly by the other aspirants. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Unity, to be real, must stand the severest strain without breaking.” This election provides an opportunity for the PDP to demonstrate this principle and rally together for the greater good of Edo Central.

Ultimately, the people of Edo Central deserve a senator who will prioritize their interests and work tirelessly to bring development to the region. The coming weeks will reveal which party and candidate will rise to this challenge and earn the mandate of the Esan people.
