NIGERIA, ABUJA – Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has met with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the teenager whose wrongful incarceration sparked national outcry.

Quadri, who was recently released after what Obi described as “unjust and illegal incarceration,” shared his dream of returning to school with the Labour Party chieftain.

“I listened to Quadri today, and one thing stood out clearly: his unwavering desire for education,” Obi said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school and complete his education—and I will make sure he gets it.”

Obi praised the legal team led by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, as well as activists Dele Farotimi and Ms. Hassana Nurudeen, for their instrumental roles in securing the boy’s release.

He expressed deep gratitude for their tireless efforts, calling them “unrelenting voices for justice.”

While celebrating the teenager’s freedom, Obi emphasized that accountability must follow.

“We must not stop at his release. Those responsible for his illegal incarceration must be held accountable,” he insisted. “We cannot afford to allow such acts of criminality to go unpunished.”

Obi’s visit underscores broader concerns about Nigeria’s justice system, particularly as it affects vulnerable populations.

“Together, we will build a Nigeria where education, freedom, rule of law, equity and justice, care and protection of the less privileged will stand as the foundation of our democracy,” he said.

He concluded with a reaffirmation of his vision: “A new Nigeria is possible.”
