Preserving The Inviolability Of The Senate: An Open Letter To Senator David Mark – By Senator Ehigie Uzamere

From 1960 to date, the Federal Republic of Nigeria has had fifteen (15) Senate Presidents, including such personalities like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dennis Osadebay during the period of Federation to Nwafor Orizu and Joseph Wayas in the 1st and 2nd Republics. Of the fifteen Senate Presidents, the following are alive: Iyorche Ayu, Ameh Ebute, Anyim Pius Anyim, Adolphus Wabara, Ken Nnamani, David Mark, Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan and the incumbent Godswill Akpabio. It goes without saying that these men represent a fair representation of gentlemen, men of honour, and good character, and my write-up is addressed to one of them. Once an SP is always an SP.

Dear Senate President David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark, I am pleading that you rise up and save the sanctity of the Senate. I chose you because not only did I serve in the Senate during your tenure, you served the longest of all the Senate Presidents. Your ability to have a peaceful 8-year period as Senate President speaks volumes of your character and inspiring leadership quality.

Today, the Red Chamber we are proud of is reduced to a red light zone chamber with our nation being regaled with stories of sexual harassment in the hallowed chamber. The situation will definitely get messier in the Court as incontrovertible evidence(s) will be tendered as proof to either confirm the allegation or disprove it. No matter the outcome, it is the Senate that would be brought to disrepute.

Most distinguished, I am pleading that you call your fellow SPs together and wade into this issue before it drags the Senate into the mud of opprobrium.

There’s indeed an urgent need to secure the Senate from violation. This message comes from deep down my heart as I pray you accept my proposal, think over it, and rise to the occasion. May God grant you the wisdom to pull this through.

Senator Uzamere was a two-time senator who represented Edo South Santorial District in the 6th and 7th Senate from 2007 to 2015.
