At the University of Uyo’s (UNIUYO) 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies yesterday, President Bola Tinubu called on graduates to use their skills to contribute to Nigeria’s growth rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

In a message delivered by Professor Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Tinubu encouraged graduates to become agents of positive change within Nigeria, saying, “The government has invested significantly in your education, equipping you to make meaningful contributions to society.” He urged them to resist the allure of moving overseas, asserting that, together, Nigerians can create a future with “equally green pastures” at home.

Emphasizing education’s role in national development, Tinubu called on Nigerian universities to drive research that addresses societal challenges. Professor Georgewill noted that, too often, valuable research is left on the shelf instead of being applied to real-world issues. He acknowledged Nigeria’s challenges but affirmed that the government remains committed to addressing these problems, especially for the most vulnerable.

UNIUYO’s Chancellor, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Maje, Emir of Hadejia, also congratulated the graduates, emphasizing how discipline and adherence to university rules shaped their academic journey. He highlighted the importance of national unity in achieving Tinubu’s vision for the country, reminding the audience that resilience and patriotism helped leading economies overcome similar struggles.

During the event, Pro-Chancellor Professor Zubairu Abdallah expressed gratitude for initiatives such as the student loan scheme and advocated for more funding to support the university’s growth. Abdallah underscored the importance of enhancing UNIUYO’s facilities, particularly science laboratories.

UNIUYO’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, commended the university’s achievements despite funding limitations and challenges such as security and land encroachment. Over 90% of UNIUYO’s academic programs now hold full accreditation, with efforts underway to reach 100%.

The convocation celebrated the accomplishments of graduates, including 57 who achieved first-class honors.
