Key Issues Addressed

Rebuttal Against Delisting Claims

Chief Iyadim refuted allegations that he or his group advocated for removing Bakassi from Nigeria’s list of local governments, calling such claims false and politically motivated.

He emphasized that Bakassi remains legally recognized and criticized activists spreading misleading narratives.

Governance and Political Challenges

He defended Bakassi Local Government Chairman Hon. Effiong Okon against accusations of working against Bakassi’s interests.

He also highlighted past efforts by the APC-led government, including an MoU (H.J 3/2013) to unify Bakassi’s mainland and riverine communities, which failed due to legal disputes.

Unfulfilled Promises and Legal Evidence, Chief Iyadim presented legal documents proving Bakassi’s ongoing marginalization, including:

Law No. 7 (2007) establishing Bakassi’s structure but needing amendments.

INEC electoral records showing elections in Dayspring 1, 2, and Qua Island since 2011 without tangible resettlement. Cross River State’s land revocation for resettlement that remains unimplemented.

A letter from former Vice President Mohammed Sambo, forming a committee to address the crisis.

Call for Government Action

He called for immediate government intervention, emphasizing that Bakassi’s people have remained displaced despite promises of resettlement.

Impact and Conclusion

The meeting reignited the Bakassi resettlement debate, increasing pressure on the Tinubu administration to act. Notable figures such as Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Hon. Effiong Okon, and Obol Okoi Obono-Obla support the call for justice.
