In a dramatic turn of events, thousands of protesters converged on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday, rallying for the immediate dismissal of Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Truth Live News gathered that, under the banner of the Save Democracy Group (SDG), the protesters voiced their grievances, accusing Olukoyede of violating the law and disregarding the judiciary. According to a statement released by the group’s convener, Comrade Toyosi Moshood, since assuming office, Olukoyede has undermined the nation’s democracy and trampled on its rule of law.
“The recent instances of the EFCC seemingly flouting court orders, coupled with its tendency to publicly tarnish the reputations of individuals without securing convictions, illustrate the agency’s departure from its intended purpose,” the statement read.
The protesters called for Olukoyede’s removal to restore public confidence in the EFCC and prevent the further mismanagement of public funds. They emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy, citing the sacrifices made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others to establish democratic governance in Nigeria.
“We urge Mr. President to take decisive action to remove individuals who do not uphold the democratic values he champions,” the statement continued. “The EFCC chairman has become a moral and political liability to Mr. President.”
The demand for Olukoyede’s dismissal may not be unconnected with his recent attempts to probe former governor of Kogi state and other high profile officials of the last administration.
