The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has declared that President Bola Tinubu would be hailed as a hero if he ensures the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The group urged him to uphold these principles by facilitating Kanu’s release from DSS custody emphasizing Tinubu’s history as an advocate for the rule of law.
The South East geopolitical zone anxiously awaits the Supreme Court’s decision on Kanu’s case, scheduled for December 15, 2023. COSEYL believes that Tinubu’s commitment to justice will not only free Kanu but also alleviate insecurity in the region.
The news generated mixed reactions online. Some asserted that the release or otherwise should not be the purview of the president.
Others said, Tinubu should release him even before the court verdict as a veto decision.
While others say, his release may lead to more violence and unrest in the South East.
Truth Live News gathered that Tinubu’s previous involvement in NADECO and the fight against military dictatorship, asserting that releasing Kanu would demonstrate consistency with these values.
Kanu, detained since 2021 following an arrest in Kenya, faces a pivotal moment in his legal journey. COSEYL expresses confidence that Tinubu’s intervention can bring about positive change, echoing the sentiments of many in the South East.
If Tinubu acts decisively, he stands to be celebrated as a champion of the rule of law and a catalyst for regional stability.
