Abia state Governor Dr Alex Otti, has directed the relocation of traders to a temporary site following a fire outbreak on Saturday’s night.
He gave the directive when he did a brief stopover at the damaged section of Ahia Ohuru (New Market) at Ngwa Road that gutted by fire in Aba.
Otti observed that the market structures are in very poor condition and pose a great risk to the safety and health of the people.
“I am sad by the sight of the damage and the loss of livelihoods for many of our hardworking traders.”
“This is unacceptable and must be addressed urgently,” the Governor said.
Accordingly, “I have directed the Mayor of Aba South, Chief Uche Wogu, market leadership and the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to draw up a plan on relocation of traders to a temporary site.”
In addition, “demolish old buildings, and rebuild modern and well-planned market that will meet the needs of the traders and customers,” Otti stated.
Via his X handle, Governor Otti said he would provide conducive, secure, and attractive market for business activities.
He said they will not allow any obstacle to hinder the progress and prosperity of their people.
However, he appealed to the traders and the public to cooperate with his administration as they embark on this project.
Moreover, he assured that he will do everything possible to minimize the inconvenience and complete the work as soon as possible.
