Residents of Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state, are no doubt presently going through shocking epidemic of crime.
This was shown when some persons gruesomely murdered at the early hours of the day last week.
Also, a medical doctor with Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Dr Wallace George was also observed to have been attacked in his house located in Jalingo metropolis.
The hoodlums were also said to have shed bloods by cutting short the lives of two Vigilantes whom newsmen tried to repel the attack.
Some of the residents who spoke with newsmen believed that the ongoing trend, if not urgently addressed, would no doubt have a negative impact on the forthcoming general elections.
The development, according to Barrister Nurudeen Mohammed
“is scary and security agencies must stand tall to arrest this ugly trend.”
Wondering where “people will be safe in the state if they are not safe even in Jalingo,” he said “I am afraid that we may have a situation at hand that we might not be able to handle with elections around the corner.”
Speaking on the attack on Dr George, the President of the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Dr Edeth Nkantah, said a lot of doctors are traumatized by the incident.
Nkantah who could not get what necessitated the attack Enjoined the government to act fast adding that it is a matter of urgency put in place mechanisms that will frustrate the hoodlums by making life cumbersome for residents of the Jalingo metropolis and the state at large.
“Unnecessary and unprovoked attacks on medical personnel are condemnable and can affect the health and wellbeing of other members of the society,” said NMA chairman.
He said:
“If doctors are not safe in their working and residential environment” executing their assigned responsibilities, he believed “may not be guaranteed and they may be forced to down tools at short notice.”
The association, as stated by him “call on the State Governor, Commissioner of Police, Director DSS, Commandant, NSCDC and other heads of security agencies in the State to swing into action and improve the general security situation and ensure the safety of medical doctors and other health personnel.”
Other staff of the Omas Royal Academy, who also spoke on the gruesome killing of one of the school drivers (Innocent), enjoined the government to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book.
Confirming the attacks, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gambo Kwache said the investigation into the matter was ongoing.
Pleading with the people to go about their normal business, more personnel, according to him, have been deployed to track down the killers.
Inorder to achieve this, the public, as suggested by him, should not hesitate to make available to the command and other sister agencies information that would enable them to fish out the perpetrators from their hideouts.
