Former Local Government Council chairmen in Rivers State have expressed their unwavering support for Governor Siminialayi Fubara, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu. The ex-chairmen claim the President acted based on misinformation.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on behalf of the 23 former LGA chairmen, Ezebunwo Ichemati, the past chairman of Port Harcourt City, described the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as “unfortunate.” He praised Governor Fubara’s commitment to peace and development.
“We, the immediate past Local Government Chairmen of Rivers State, stand in unwavering solidarity with you in this trying time,” Ichemati said. “Your administration has significantly contributed to the stability and progress of the state through numerous pro-people projects and strong collaboration with security agencies.”
The former chairmen rejected claims that Fubara failed to comply with the Supreme Court ruling of February 28, 2025, which had directed the transition of local government leadership. They insisted that they had obeyed the directive to hand over to the Heads of Local Government Administration.
“It is deeply disheartening that certain individuals have misinformed Mr. President, falsely claiming that Governor Fubara did not adhere to the Supreme Court ruling,” Ichemati added.
He also accused political opponents of frustrating the governor’s attempts to present the 2025 budget to the House of Assembly, saying their actions prioritized personal and political interests over the welfare of Rivers State residents.
Despite these challenges, the former chairmen emphasized their full support for Fubara, urging the people of Rivers State to remain steadfast.
“We, along with the vast majority of Rivers people—both politically affiliated and non-affiliated—stand solidly behind you,” Ichemati concluded.
The crisis in Rivers State continues to generate political tension, with calls for dialogue to resolve the ongoing disputes.
