Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, testified in court today, claiming that Spanish player Jenni Hermoso had given her consent for him to kiss her after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory in 2023. Rubiales, 47, is accused of sexual assault for kissing Hermoso on the mouth without her consent, as well as attempting to coerce her into publicly saying the kiss was consensual.

Rubiales recounted the incident, stating that Hermoso had squeezed him tightly under his armpits, lifted him, and then agreed to a kiss when he asked. He described the kiss as “an act of affection” and claimed that it had no importance for either of them. However, prosecutors are seeking two and a half years in prison against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion.

Hermoso, however, testified on the trial’s opening day that she felt “disrespected” by the non-consensual kiss, which she said had “stained one of the happiest days of my life.” The incident has sparked outrage in Spain, with many condemning the prevalence of sexism in sports and beyond.

Rubiales’ testimony is the latest development in a highly publicized trial that has captivated the nation.

The former football federation chief has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by “false feminists.” However, prosecutors argue that Rubiales’ actions constitute a serious breach of consent and trust.

The trial is ongoing, with Rubiales facing serious charges that could result in significant prison time. The outcome will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for the sports world and beyond.
