The former emir of Kano in northern Nigeria has unveiled that he traveled to Niamey, the capital of Niger, with the intention of partaking in mediation discussions with the military leaders responsible for orchestrating a coup just two weeks ago.
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former emir, revealed, “We engaged in talks with the nation’s leader,” referring to General Abdourahamane Tiani, the newly appointed leader of Niger.
During his appearance on Nigerian state television, he articulated his intention to convey a “message” to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu. He emphasized that his involvement was in a personal capacity and not as a government representative.
Sanusi’s communication occurred just before a pivotal summit organized by the West African bloc ECOWAS, which is focused on resolving the ongoing crisis in the Sahel region. This summit is set to be overseen by Tinubu.
