A sad incident occurred in Ejigbo, Osun state when a United States Professor and politician, Richard Adeoriokin, was accidentally shot and killed by a local security guard while saying goodbye after an event.
Truthlive news gathered that the incident happened around 8:30 pm on Saturday along Inisha Road of Ejigbo after a public function attended by Professor Adeoriokin, his political associates, and the son of Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oyeyode Oyesosin.
After a meeting at the king’s residence, the son asked the security guard to fire gunshots into the air to bid farewell. Unfortunately, one of the bullets hit the Professor, causing his death. The angry crowd then killed the security guard in retaliation.
Afeez Lawal, the personal assistant to Professor Richard, explained that his boss, a lecturer in Houston, Texas, and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had attended a ceremony where Governor Ademola Adeleke was honored before the tragic incident occurred.
“We headed to Ejigbo for the 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo. Immediately, after the event, we were almost set to go back to Osogbo, the king’s son, Oyeyode Oyesosin said we should go to his house along Inisha road for a brief meeting,” said Afeez.
“When the king’s son wanted to bid his guests farewell, he ordered the local security to fire guns into the air as a gesture, but unfortunately, one of the security’s guns was facing down, and he fired the bullet downward. The bullet hit Professor on his leg, and before we could rush him to the hospital, he had lost a lot of blood. He passed away at the Baptist hospital in Ejigbo.”
Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and expressed condolences. He called for preventive action by security agencies to avoid possible counter-attacks or violence in the town. The families of the deceased were urged not to take the law into their own hands.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) also condoled with Ejigbo over the tragic incident and requested a thorough investigation by the Police Authority.
