The Nigerian Senate has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to suspend further demolition of buildings in Abuja until further notice.

The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the FCT, and was adopted during Thursday’s plenary session.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who announced the resolution, clarified that the suspension does not apply to buildings currently involved in legal disputes.

The directive comes amid ongoing concerns about the impact of demolitions on residents and property owners in the capital city. Further discussions on urban planning and development are expected in the coming weeks.
