Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described Canada as one of the friendliest countries to Nigeria, despite the current visa row.
Sani termed the decision of the Canadian Embassy to deny Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, a visa as unfortunate.
He noted that the situation should be handled responsibly and diplomatically.
Posting on X, Sani wrote: “To be fair, Canada has always been one of the friendliest countries to Nigeria”.
“The country has accommodated thousands of Nigerians, giving them a second chance to build their lives, educate their children, and support their families back home”.
“I believe most people know someone who lives, studies, or works in Canada.
The incident of denying our service chiefs a visa is unfortunate.
Our military and service chiefs are doing a good job defending our country from terrorists.
“This isolated incident should be handled responsibly and diplomatically so that it doesn’t escalate further.”
A few weeks ago, the Chief of Defence Staff had disclosed that he was unable to attend an event for veterans in Canada because the country’s embassy had denied him an entry visa.
Reacting, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said it was disrespectful to Nigeria for Canada to deny the defence chief a visa.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the action of the Canadian embassy showed a lack of respect for Nigeria.
