Omoyele Sowore, a prominent Nigerian human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, has declared his intention to contest and win the 2027 general elections against President Bola Tinubu and other contenders.

Truth Live News gathered that the activist cum politician made this announcement on Saturday during the 3rd ECOWAS-Abuja International Marathon, where he also participated in the 5km race. Sowore emphasized his commitment to securing the “ultimate prize” in the forthcoming political race.

Beyond his political ambitions, Sowore highlighted the potential of sports to significantly boost Nigeria’s economy, suggesting that investments in various sports disciplines could yield substantial returns comparable to the nation’s oil revenue. He advocated for diversification into sports such as swimming, snooker, javelin, and shot put, underscoring the versatility and potential of Nigerians in these fields.

Born on February 16, 1971, in Ondo State, Nigeria, Omoyele Sowore has been a steadfast advocate for democracy and human rights. His activism dates back to his university days at the University of Lagos, where he served as the President of the Student Union Government from 1992 to 1994. During this period, he was actively involved in anti-cultism and anti-corruption campaigns, which led to confrontations with university authorities and extended his academic tenure by two years due to his activism.

Sowore’s activism has led to multiple arrests and detentions by Nigerian authorities. In 2019, he was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges including treason, cybercrime, and money laundering, following his call for nationwide protests under the banner “RevolutionNow.” His detention sparked international outcry, with organizations like the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights commission denouncing the actions against him. Despite being granted bail, Sowore faced re-arrest and continued legal battles, highlighting the challenges faced by activists in Nigeria.

In 2006, Sowore founded Sahara Reporters, an online news agency based in New York City, dedicated to promoting citizen journalism and exposing corruption and human rights abuses in Nigeria. The platform has disrupted traditional media by publishing leaked and unfiltered information, holding those in power accountable. Operating from New York provided Sowore with a degree of protection, allowing him to report on sensitive issues without immediate repercussions from Nigerian authorities.

Sahara Reporters gained international recognition in 2009 when it was the first to identify and publish a photo of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the “underwear bomber,” who attempted to detonate an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines flight. The platform’s fearless reporting has made it a target of cyberattacks, legal challenges, and threats, underscoring the risks associated with investigative journalism in Nigeria.

Sowore’s unwavering commitment to democracy, transparency, and human rights continues to influence Nigeria’s political landscape. His announcement to contest in the 2027 elections signals his enduring dedication to political reform and societal advancement.
