Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent tariff announcement, labeling it “unprecedented” and a return to outdated protectionist policies.

Sánchez argued that Trump’s tariffs would harm the Spanish economy, prompting his government to propose a €14.1 billion support package to mitigate the impact.

Sánchez said that Europe should respond with a package of counter-tariffs and other measures, while also establishing an aid fund financed by revenues from tariffs imposed on the US.

In a particular statement, reported by Reuters, Sánchez said that Europe faces a trade attack from the West, while simultaneously responding to a military attack from Russia in the East.

Trump’s tariff announcement, dubbed “liberation day” for Americans, includes a 10% baseline on imports from every country, in addition to specific tariffs on certain nations.

Sánchez’s reaction reflects the growing concern among European leaders about the potential consequences of Trump’s protectionist policies.
