Following the recent resignation of its president Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid protests against his government, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been sworn as acting president.
This was disclosed by Wickremesinghe’s office in a statement on Friday.
The former president had fled his country secretly to Singapore in a military plane amidst several months of protest calling for his immediate resignation over the “worse ever” downslide of the country’s economy during his regime.
The 73-year-old took his oath of office before chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
