CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – The Cross River State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu, for his commitment to revitalizing the state’s sports sector.
The Chairman of the SWAN Election Committee (SWANECO), Comrade Isoni Isoni, made the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Nsa Gill, in Calabar.
Comrade Isoni highlighted the administration’s strategic efforts in repositioning sports in the state, particularly through its systematic support for athletes. “Governor Otu’s administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring that our athletes participate in national and international sporting events.”
“This is a clear indication of his dedication to sports development,” he said.
He also lauded the Governor’s role in upgrading facilities at the Calabar Golf Club, a move he described as crucial for bringing the club up to international standards. “The recent facelift at the Calabar Golf Club is a major milestone, and it will go a long way in attracting more professional tournaments to the state,” he added.
Speaking on football development, Comrade Isoni praised the Governor for increasing the monthly subvention to Rovers of Calabar.
According to him, “This boost in funding will not only improve the welfare of the players but also enhance their performance in national competitions.”
Expressing optimism, he stated, “With the current level of investment in sports, we are confident that Cross River State will soon reclaim its lost glory as a hub for sporting excellence.”
During the visit, the SWANECO Chairman also informed the Chief Press Secretary about the upcoming SWAN Delegates Conference, where a new Executive Council will be elected to steer the affairs of the Association in the state.

In his response, Mr. Nsa Gill welcomed the delegation and assured them of his support. “I am delighted by this visit and fully prepared to provide the necessary assistance for a successful Delegates Conference,” he said.
He further urged members of SWAN to conduct themselves in a mature manner during the election. “It is important that the election process is peaceful and produces a leadership that will take the Association to greater heights,” Mr. Gill advised.
He also expressed gratitude for the commendation given to the Governor, assuring that the administration remains committed to doing even more for sports development in the state. “Governor Otu is passionate about sports, and his administration will continue to implement policies that will uplift the sector,” he affirmed.
