Tight security measures have been put in place around the Federal High Court in Abuja as the highly anticipated trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is set to begin today (Monday).

Agents of the Department of State Services (DSS) are conducting thorough searches of lawyers, visitors, and passersby, verifying their identities and redirecting some as necessary.

Kanu, who has been in legal proceedings since 2015, is facing charges related to terrorism, as ordered by the Supreme Court.

A hearing notice issued on February 8, 2023, outlined expectations for both parties, emphasizing the presentation of all relevant evidence and witnesses.

“If either party wishes to postpone the hearing, they must apply to the Court as soon as possible and be prepared to provide evidence to support their request,” the notice stated.

“The parties are reminded that during the hearing, they must present all evidence, whether through witnesses or documents, to support their case and challenge that of their opponent.”

Recall that on December 15, the Supreme Court upheld the Federal Government’s charges of treason and terrorism against Nnamdi Kanu.

Previously, on October 13, 2022, the Court of Appeal had dismissed all charges against Kanu, citing violations of international laws regarding his forceful return from Kenya to Nigeria.

However, the appellate court later paused its decision after the federal government requested a review by the Supreme Court.

In its ruling, the apex court emphasized the importance of upholding legal jurisdiction despite any violations by law enforcement agencies, stressing the need to maintain Nigeria’s reputation by adhering to both international and local laws.

While condemning any unlawful actions, the court allowed the appeal of the Federal Government, signaling a continuation of the legal proceedings against Nnamdi Kanu.
