Born on November 4, 1951, in Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria, Jim Ovia has been a transformative figure in the banking sector. He founded Zenith Bank in June 1990 and served as its Managing Director/Chief Executive for two decades until his retirement in July 2010. Under his leadership, Zenith Bank evolved into one of Nigeria’s largest and most profitable financial institutions, with a substantial international presence. Ovia currently serves as the Group Chairman of the bank.
Beyond banking, Ovia is the founder and chancellor of James Hope University Lekki, Lagos, which commenced activities in January 2024. His philanthropic endeavors include the establishment of the Jim Ovia Foundation, dedicated to providing scholarships and supporting educational initiatives across Nigeria.
The Freedom of the City of London is a historic accolade dating back to 1237, originally granting recipients the right to trade and conduct business within the city.
