The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, describing it as a glaring display of insensitivity and detachment from the realities facing Nigerians.
In a statement by its spokesperson, made available to Truth Live News, Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party National Publicity Secretary, slammed the president’s address as “a colossal waste of time,” filled with false claims and hollow promises that do nothing to address Nigeria’s deepening crises.
The PDP lambasted the speech as “another round of lethargic and empty rhetoric,” designed to deceive Nigerians in the face of what it called the APC’s monumental failures. According to the party, Tinubu’s remarks trivialized the devastating economic hardships, unemployment, and widespread hunger plaguing millions of citizens, failing to offer any concrete solutions or policy shifts to ease the suffering.
“President Tinubu, by delivering this speech, has further demonstrated his administration’s disregard for the outcry of Nigerians, confirming our position that there is no hope in sight under the inept, tone-deaf leadership of the APC,” the statement read.
The PDP went on to accuse Tinubu of refusing to address the crippling policies that have driven the nation into deeper poverty and unrest. It also rebuked the president for attempting to downplay the severity of the crisis, citing that over 100 million Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities, a reality that contradicts Tinubu’s claim that only 10% of the population faces hunger.
Moreover, the party dismissed the president’s assurances of economic recovery and food sufficiency as nothing more than “irreconcilable fantasies,” noting that Tinubu’s administration has failed to address the key drivers of economic collapse, including the skyrocketing fuel prices, the freefall of the Naira, and the lack of investment in the agricultural and productive sectors.
The PDP also issued a stark warning that Tinubu’s failure to acknowledge or act upon the grievances of Nigerians could push the country toward authoritarianism, adding that his speech was “shockingly silent” on the erosion of democratic rights and the integrity of elections under the APC’s watch.
The opposition party declared that the president’s speech was a missed opportunity to offer Nigerians renewed hope, instead serving as a clear signal of the APC’s disconnection from the plight of the people.
