Traffic Decongestion Directive: Gov. Otu Orders Evacuation Of Roadside Traders

The Governor of Cross River State Sen Bassey Edet Otu, has issued a new directive that aims to reduce traffic in Calabar metropolis.

The new directives Include evacuation of all roadside trading along the Watt market Roundabout and evirons with immediate effect.

This he said, is to ensure total decongestion of the roads as well as allow for proper planning of the area by the state Governmment.

Emmanuel Ogbeche, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said in a release signed by him that the directive is with effect from Monday, October 30,2023.

The traffic decongestion directive also include the immediate evacuation of all fruit sellers along MCC road by Mobil filling station, IBB way, Marian road, and highway opposite U.J Esuene Sports Stadium.

The evacuation directive also include those selling along adjourning routes like Nelson Mandela, Garden, Goldie and Bedwell Streets. “Traders along Nelson Mandela road Only, will be allowed to sell from 6:30p.m,” it said.

However, Market leadership are advised to effect a comprehensive sanitation of the market before the next day as Governmment will not hesitate to sanction defaulters.

Gov. Otu said alternative fruit arcade have been provided for them at the Calabar botanical garden as well as the Ishie field (Triangle)opposite the flour mills.

He directed market associations in the market to advise their members accordingly saying security operatives are to enforce the order.
