A significant bridge in Baltimore, USA collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday around 1:30 am local time (5:30 am UK time).
A video obtained by Truthlive news shows a large section of the 1.6 mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River following the collision. Vehicles can be seen falling from the bridge in the footage.
Baltimore’s fire service reported that up to 20 people were in the water after the collapse.
The cargo ship, named the Dali, was en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, when the collision occurred. MarineTraffic data indicated that the Singapore-flagged ship stopped at the bridge before two tugboats arrived at the scene.
CCTV footage and marine tracking data revealed that the Dali lost power, changed course, and began emitting smoke about 60 seconds before striking the bridge.
A rescue operation involving at least 10 boats is currently underway.
In reaction to the incident, Maryland governor Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency as the search for individuals in the water continues.
